How to detox your dreadlocks at home: the method, the timing and the aftercare
Over time, dirt, impurities, and product residue can build up within dreadlocks. A dreadlock detox is a 30-minute warm-water soak with a residue-busting powder. You do it every three to six months to lift out any build up. We will walk you through the exact method below, plus the aftercare to keep them that way.

Why your dreads need a detox in the first place
Even with the best dreadlock shampoo, mature locks hold onto the things shampoo cannot reach. Wax from old products, mineral build-up from the shower. Salt, chlorine, sunscreen and a season’s worth of beach trips. None of it is dangerous, but it dulls the colour, weighs the dreads down and can start to smell musty. A detox lifts it all out in one go.
Detox for Dreads: The Method
What you'll need:
- Inflatable Detox Basin or other deep basin
- Detox Powder We have detox bombs available from Raw Roots, Dollylocks, & LOKKSTOKK.
- Warm water (not too hot)
Optional
- Dreadlock Hair Towel / Hair Dryer Bonnet - Speed up drying time
- Dreadlock Shampoo - to give your dreads a cleanse after the soak.
-
Conditioning Oil - especially if your dreads feel dry afterwards.
Step-by-step:
- Fill the basin with warm water and stir in the detox powder as per instructions.
- Submerge your hair completely. Sit comfortable so you can stay there for the full soak.
- Soak your dreadlocks for 10-30 minutes, allowing the water and detox powder to penetrate the hair and remove any impurities.
- Gently massage your scalp and dreadlocks to help loosen any buildup and make it easier to rinse out.
- Rinse thoroughly with warm running water to remove any residual impurities and to make sure that they are completely clean.
- Optional - wash with a dreadlock shampoo to help remove any trace of the detox powder.
- Once you are done, allow your dreadlocks to dry completely. A Dreadlock Hair Towel can reduce drying time by 50%.

What to do if you locs feel funky after?
Most people finish a detox feeling lighter and smelling fresh. Occasionally locs can feel a bit dry or frizzy. Here is what to do:
Dry? A few drops of Hydrating oil rubbed gently into the lengths will sort it. Don’t overdo it; less is more.
Fluffy or frizzy? Just like after a wash your hair might feel frizzy. A Tightening Gel or spray can help tame any frizz or flyaways.
How often do you need to do a Dreadlock Detox?
The frequency of detoxing your dreadlocks depends on several factors, such as your hair type, lifestyle, and environment. Generally, it's recommended to detox your dreadlocks every 3-6 months, but even once a year might be right for you. Regular soaks can help to maintain the health and appearance of your dreadlocks over time.
A simple rule of thumb: if your locks feel heavier than they should, look duller than usual, or smell musty no matter how recently you washed, it is time.
Frequently asked questions
How often should I detox my locs? Every 3 to 6 months for most people. More often if you swim, sweat a lot or use a lot of styling product. Less often if you wash regularly with a residue-free dreadlock shampoo.
Can you detox new dreads? You can, but you don’t usually need to in the first 3 to 6 months. Brand-new dreads do not have years of build-up to lift out. Keep washing with a clean shampoo and start detoxing from around the 6-month mark.
How long does a detox take? About 10 to 30 minutes of soaking depending on the kit, plus rinse and dry time. Most people block out an hour to do the whole thing comfortably.
Will detoxing loosen my locks? Mature, well-formed dreads will not come undone from a detox. They may feel slightly lighter and a touch fluffier for a day or two while they reset. Newer dreads (under 6 months) are more vulnerable, which is why we suggest waiting before your first detox.
